Why Diets Fail
Don't you
just hate the word 'fail'? No one likes to be
a failure, particularly when dieting. When I was
younger, my mother shared a story with me about her
cousins. Long ago, kids brought home the following
grades: A, B, C, D, F - with all the pluses and minuses
added, too. The D's and F's were always written
in with a red pen so that the parents would immediately
spot the bad mark.
My mom's
cousins were a rowdy lot of boys - always in one jam,
and then another. And whenever they got in trouble,
they would always make light of it. A good example
was when one of the boys brought home his report card
and told his mom, "Just look at all those pretty
little red d's." Of course, these boys never
failed because their teacher didn't want to take any
chances in having the boys revisit her class come the
following fall.
This story
illustrates that some people can take the worst of circumstances
and add on a positive spin. And that's how we
should look at dieting, when our diet plan isn't going
so well.
Diets fail
for all types of reasons - from a bland diet plan to
just being flat tired of dieting. Dieting is stressful.
Take a moment and think about having to watch everything
that you eat for the next week. Now, think about
eating anything that you want for the next week. I'll
bet you felt like you were going on vacation, didn't
you!
Given this
example, our goal is to make our diet plan as easy as
we can - to make it enjoyable, to fill it up with small
goals along the way as we work towards reaching our
overall weight loss goal.
