baseball.gif If you determine that your child isn't getting enough activity, rather than tell them, "Get outside and play!  You're spending too much time in front of the tv!" a better solution might be to enroll them in an activity that they may express interest in.  

Martial arts is an excellent example and is something that not only promotes healthy activity, it strengthens the body, the mind and is an activity that most kids enjoy participating in.  It may also save their life one day as they learn special skills to protect themselves with.

baseball.gif If the child's snacks are unhealthy OR too frequent, purchase healthy snacks.  Some of the best come in a package prepared by Mother Nature herself.  Also allow a few 'naughty snacks' every now and then so that your child will learn that you can eat sweet treats every now and then and also experience good health.  This also allows the child to have a pattern for eating.  If the child's diet contains forbidden foods, this may backfire on the parent when the child reaches adulthood.

baseball.gif Meal time should be relaxed and enjoyable.  A pretty blue glass adds temptation to a wholesome serving of milk.  Have fun with food.  Invite your kids into the kitchen and put your imagination to work.

baseball.gif If school lunches aren't up to your standards, let your school know your thoughts.  Enlist the support of other parents if need be.  This doesn't mean that the school should jerk out all the snack machines - although it would be good if they could be filled with more wholesome foods.  Fruit bars, fig bars, whole grain chips, Fruit Roll-Ups, nuts (for older kids), peanut butter crackers - all of these foods can fit into the daily diet and offer nutritional value.  Sodas can be replaced with water and juice.  Even if the contents of snack machines don't evolve, it's okay for a child to enjoy a treat now and then.  Moderation is the key!
