Candy is Dandy When it's Handy But Oh-So-Randy on the Body
Sugar & the Impact it has on weight.
The Childhood Years
Chester loved visiting the drug store, mainly because of all the pretty candy on display. He didn't think that the owner Ms. Meers like him much, though.
Every time Chester would leave the drug store, he could look back over his shoulder and see her spraying something on the glass that protected the candy menagerie. Guess she thought he had germs or something.
Nonetheless, Chester just held tighter to his treasured bag of candy, walking hand and hand with his Mom as they exited the drug store. He didn't like holding his Mom's hand anymore - he was getting much too big for that. But whenever she bought him candy, he obliged. Besides, it seemed to make her smile and she held her head a bit higher whenever Chester held her hand.
At this young age, Chester was not aware of the impact that sweets played on his healthy diet. The only thing that he didn't like about getting candy was that his Mom always made him brush his teeth after he enjoyed his loot, telling him that if he didn't, then all of his teeth were going to rot out. But she always said that about sucking on lemons, too, and that hadn't seemed to hurt his teeth one bit.
Chester always chose the neatest candy: banana bubblegum cigars, candy cigarettes, candy necklaces, a ring supporting a red crystal sugar stone, He especially liked 'puffing' on the candy cigarettes and planned to take up smoking just like his Dad when he grew up. Dad could blow the neatest smoke rings. And his favorite actor, John Wayne, was in all the really good cigarette television commercials. He was tough, and Chester intended on being tough, too! Yes, candy was certainly dandy!
The big company candy plants had begun to introduce giant sized bars that suited Chester's appetite just fine. The giant candy bars also went well with the new giant sized sodas.
But soon, things would change....
The Adult Years
Chester's love for sweet things matured with age. Although he wasn't into bubblegum or candy necklaces anymore, those giant candy bars were tops! He enjoyed the bag candy too, particularly amid the holiday season. When Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas arrived, he would purchase extra bags as they tended to go on sale.
He had also found a new love; cheesecake. It didn't taste like any cake that he'd ever had - so luscious, so creamy. Just like he'd died and gone to heaven.
As the days rolled into months and the months rolled into years Chester was annoyed with tiny rashes that appeared on his body from time to time. And he was craving water - it was probably why he had to get up so many times at night to visit the bathroom.
Then one day, he got so busy that he didn't have time for breakfast - much less lunch. Not even time for the stash of candy in his desk. He was on the work-floor supervising a shipment of sport's equipment that had a deadline they were hard-pressed to meet when he was seized with dizziness. Two fellow co-workers managed to break his fall. Chester was a really big guy at this point - his weight more so than his body frame.
As Chester struggled to recover, he knew what was wrong. He'd seen the same symptoms in his dad over the years. Diabetes....
It was time to make a trip to the doctor.
