Managing a Healthy Daily Diet on a Limited Budget
Hamburger Recipes
Hamburgers are among the most economical foods to create but they can be extreme in fat and calories. The good news is that hamburgers can still reside on the lunch or dinner menu and remain a healthy entree when the following simple tips are respected:
Extra lean ground beef will cost more, but it also cooks down less and is of course, a much healthier option over full-blown ground beef.
Ground turkey substitutes nicely for lean ground beef and is a fraction of the cost.
The basic hamburger is a healthy beast - bun, protein, veggies. Our diet gets into trouble when we smear on the Mayo. Using LIGHT spreads OR mustard over Mayo can save a herd of calories and fat.
Opting for a whole grain bun can take your burger up a healthy notch. In addition, opting for smaller buns can too. Less calories - and very filling. A smaller bun on your burger equals smaller buns on your body. And you'll have room for a serving of fresh sweet strawberries for dessert.
Recipe for a Healthy Hamburger
You will need the basic hamburger essentials: lean ground beef, whole grain buns, lettuce, tomato, onions, light Mayo and if you like cheese, opt for skim sliced mozzarella (50 calories).
This is one of our favorite versions for the hamburger and contains about 425 calories and it's ultra, ultra filling.
Thin Thin's Avocado Pepperjack Hamburger Recipe
Toast 1 small bun (110 calories) using butter flavored cooking spray. Next, check the extra lean hamburger package for calories and use about 100 calories worth. The hamburger can be cooked using your favorite method as long as fat/oil isn't added.
When hamburger is done, top with a slice of pepperjack cheese (80 calories), then remove from heat when cheese melts. Top with lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion and 1/4 of a California avocado which has been seeded, peeled and sliced (57 calories). Smear each side of the bun with whipped cream cheese. As a note, whipped cream cheese contains less calories (60 calories) than regular cream cheese (because it's whipped). It's also easy to spread. Place meat and veggies between buns - and you'll have a heavenly hamburger.
Avocado Calories (without seed & skin):
Florida Avocado - 1 whole fruit contains about 365 calories.
California Avocado - 1 whole fruit contains about 227 calories.
