MONEY SAVING DESSERT TIPS
Desserts - Yes, they are the main contributors to weight gain which in turn can lead to health issues, but what's life without a little sweetness?
The two greatest offenders in desserts are sugar - weighing in at a hefty 800 calories per cup, and oil - weighing in at 120 calories and 14 fat grams per Tablespoon.
Calories and fat content can be managed wisely when we make our desserts at home, and homemade treats not only taste great - they tend to be much cheaper to create, so you can save money and enjoy your sweet reward.
Here are a few tips that can help save calories while you're saving money:
Substituting Splenda for sugar can erase a plethora of calories.
Substituting any of the following ingredients in place of oil - or even half the oil recommended in the recipe can slash calories and fat grams: light sour cream, applesauce, dried fruits, mashed and pureed fresh fruits.
When baking cookies, make the cookies smaller. Smaller cookies equals less calories and fat without subtracting flavor.
Frosting is huge when it comes to calories and fat. Seek other 'skinny' alternatives, such as our Skinny 7 Minute Frosting Recipe:
Simply beat 2 egg whites + 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar until stiff peaks form (takes about 2 minutes when a cold bowl is used). Next, slowly add 1/2 to 1 cup of Splenda - depending upon how sweet you like your frosting. Also slowly add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder and a shot of vanilla extract. Your cake will look like a heavenly creation and you'll feel like a Diet Angel in the process.
Other frosting options include dusting the cake with powdered sugar OR cocoa powder, or creating a healthier frosting using light margarine + oats + brown sugar + Splenda. And don't forget those cute sprinkles rather than frosting. And of course, the healthiest option where frosting is concerned is to simply skip it. Yes - I know, it's the best part, but a stand-alone cake can also be quite satisfying and delicious, and no sugar rush!
Fruit-based pies make a healthier option over sugar-based pies as long as the pie doesn't contain a second crust.
