The Pond Guys

How to Enjoy 'Hoppy' Weight Loss

Once I saw a very unhappy frog. For the most part, frogs are very hoppy and free - no cares, no worries, simply simple simpletons.

So when is a frog an unhappy frog? When it's a bright and sunny day, then night heralds a blue northern.

Frogs instinctively burrow up to escape the cold, but once in a blue moon, a frog will play Rambo and tough out the weather - thinking that a cold snap might be a hoax rather than the real thing.

My true love and I call these frogs The Pond Guys.

Some people act like The Pond Guys when it comes to their daily diet, particularly when holidays and special celebrations go around.

They'll have a slice of pumpkin pie, a quart of eggnog, twin turkey legs and a keg of apple cider.

The day after the feast, they ignore all the Weight Gain Warning Lights going off in their little heads - just like The Pond Guys when it comes to impending foul weather.

Rather than 'watch what they eat' these....er....Pond People like to think that the extra food won't hurt them. They ate all they wanted the day before and didn't gain weight. So they can't gain weight! They are invincible against weight gain!

As time goes by, the pounds pack on. While it's so much fun basking in food amid happy times while we're exceedingly happy, unfortunately while we're being blissful our body is calculating the calories and storing what it does not use in the fat cells.

The result in weight gain. Stored fat also alters the shape and of course the appearance of the body. While it may be stressful to discover we have gained weight - we can indeed repair the situation through weight loss.

Now while it was ultra fun to gain weight by eating and enjoying all those tasty goodies, it's not much fun losing those gained pounds. The ideal situation is to watch what we eat to avoid weight gain.

However, once the weight is gained, this very simple formula for weight loss can set things straight - but although it's simple, it's very difficult for most individuals to follow. Weight loss is rarely so simple.

- Eat three meals per day and two snacks, one in the mid-afternoon such as after school, and one about two hours after dinner and at least two hours before bedtime.

- For snacks, choose fresh fruit such as one banana, one apple, one peach. If you like candy bars and cupcakes for snack time - you can certainly enjoy your favorite foods while losing weight as long as you don't exceed the number of calories that your body requires for recommended weight. Keep in mind that most candy bars contain close to 300 calories while most cupcake packages of two contain about 400 calories. You can enjoy 4 small bananas, 4 small apples - and so forth for the same calorie amount. And you sure wouldn't want to do that. Simply put, commercially-prepared snacks tend to hold quite a number of calories and fat grams. That's when those 100-calorie snacks can help save the Diet Day.

- For breakfast, enjoy a whole grain cereal whether hot or cold along with 1/2 cup of milk. Limit adding butter or margarine as it's pure fat.

- At meal time, eat one serving; don't go back for seconds or thirds.

- Limit regular soda to one per day.

- Balance activity with relaxation. Plan to walk or run or do some type of activity that you enjoy at least 20 minutes per day.

What you don't want to do in order to lose weight is to starve. Doing such amid the teen years may cause permanent damage and health issues to the body. Take care of your body - and your body will take care of you.

As to those extra pounds - they may be bothersome and you'll probably want to lose them as quickly as possible. Please exercise patience. Being wise and losing weight safely will get you to your recommended weight - and you'll be healthier in the process!
