Healthy Tip #1 - Typically, the main course is a meat. And typically, meats are served with carbs which include: rice, couscous, macaroni, and potatoes. It's not so much the carbs that stab your health, rather the things that we add to the carbs - cheese and butter to macaroni, butter and cream to potatoes, butter and sauces to rice. So a great way to get around The Great Carb Debate while saving yourself a few calories is to opt for carbs low in calories and those that are comprised of whole grain.
Example: Next time you prepare breaded shrimp, pop it into the oven rather than frying, then load it into a whole grain hot dog bun. Top with a bit of slaw and you have a healthy meal fit for a Diet Princess or Prince.
Healthy Tip #2 - Sometimes it is fun to shuffle things up. Rather than the standard meat as the Main Course Star, try opting for a soup and salad. Or, enjoy a few pancakes topped with a bit of whipped topping and fresh strawberries rather than syrup.
Healthy Tip #3 - Let's get fruity! Dried and fresh fruit work exceptionally well with main course dishes and have the ability to create totally unique meals. Try tossing in a few dried cranberries in your next batch of chicken & rice. Add orange juice and orange zest chicken to create a lovely Orange Chicken.
And if you're eating breakfast and the main course is oatmeal - grab your box of golden or dark raisins. Don't forget a sprinkle of healthy ground cinnamon.
Healthy Tip #4 - At times, we get into a rut and our family table gets bored as it's presented with the same meals over and over and yes, over again. Grab your cookbooks and throw some life into your meals. Rather than a sandwich - try enhancing that lean meat, cheese and veggies by stuffing them into a kangaroo pocket. Rather than frying that chicken, try boiling it, then preparing a delicious chicken salad.
