How Weight Loss Impacts Your Grocery Cart
Previous Page
By making just a few simple changes in her daily diet, Betty not only managed to lose her unwanted weight, she also managed to maintain her recommended weight while improving her level of health, and perhaps her life-span.
Betty had an issue with the no fat products - she simply didn't like how they tastes. So to help her save calories and fat, she opted for the light products - the in-between products, over regular. Instead of no fat cream cheese, Betty reached for the light version over the full-blown version.
She also had issue with diet sodas, most of them leaving an unpleasant after-taste, and none of them truly comparing to their originals - no matter how many name-brand commercials claimed otherwise. Rather than blowing three to four sodas a day, she now opts to enjoy no more than one soda per day.
Fat was another issue in her former diet plan, so she replaced her vegetable shortening with healthier options - such as cooking spray and extra virgin olive oil. Let's take a look at how else Betty's weekly food purchases changed, thus shrinking her weight along with her grocery bill.

Notes
|
| Cheapest Hamburger Meat |
Leanest Hamburger Meat |
Although the lean meat is more expensive, it can slash calories and fat in half. Betty spent more money on the meat, but saved money on smaller hamburger buns, as well as opting out of cheese and chips and dip. |
| Large Hamburger Buns |
Small Hamburger Buns |
Smaller buns in the store can equal smaller buns on the body while saving money. |
| Cheddar Cheese |
Mozzarella Skim Cheese |
Betty's mozzarella contained 1/2 the calories of the cheddar and actually cost a bit less. |
| Chips, big bag + dips |
Nabisco Mini-Saltine Crackers & Pretzels |
Betty saved a plethora of money plus calories and fat grams by opting for the healthier snacks. |
| Cupcakes & Cookies |
Biscotti, all varieties
Cookies, finger-type such as ginger snaps, vanilla wafers and yes, even tiny butter cookies.
|
About the same price with the Biscotti slightly cheaper. There are only 8 Biscotti's in Betty's favorite brand, but she enjoys one per day for a skinny 90-110 calories rather than a bag or box of cupcakes and cookies per week with each cookie containing 70 calories and/or each cupcake containing 200 calories. OR, she chooses the small cookies to keep calories in check. |
| Whole Milk - 160 calories per cup |
Skim Milk - 80 calories per cup |
Betty saves 1/2 the calories while at the same time receives more calcium benefits from the skim milk - all for the same price. |
| Sour Cream |
Light Sour Cream |
For the same price, Betty gets the full-bodied flavor of sour cream with 1/3 less calories. |
| Franks |
Oscar Meyer Lean Beef Franks |
Betty's old franks contained almost 200 calories each. Her new and even tastier Oscar Meyer lean beef franks contain a scant 90 calories. |
| Mayo |
Miracle Whip Light |
Mayo is a killer when it comes to fat and calories, and it smells intensely of boiled eggs. Miracle Whip Light provides a tangy zip with loads less calories and contains a mere 20 calories per serving size while being a money-saver. Smells nicer, too. |
| Gourmet Bread |
Rainbow Sandwich Bread
Homemade Gourmet Bread
|
While Betty's gourmet bread was delicious, it was also undeliciously expensive and contained about 3 times the calories as 2 slices of Rainbow Sandwich Bread (110 calories per two slices). And when Betty is in the mood for gourmet, she bakes her own and takes care in adding healthy ingredients while keeping fat and calories to a minimum for a fraction of the cost of the commercially prepared gourmet bread. |
