Hidden Bacteria in Your Kitchen & Bath

Use our list and do a quick-check to find bacteria hiding in your home - and perhaps save you and your loved ones from a serious illness. Oddly enough, these hiding places tend to go overlooked - so get ready for some surprises.

Things in your kitchen that can make you sick: If you use the following items, it's a safe bet that they contain food particles that have the potential to spawn serious illness.

Can Opener - Every time a can is opened, the blade should be cleaned. If you haven't cleaned your blade in a while, prepare for some proper shock and awe.

Dining Room Table - If your dining room table is expandable, you'll want to check the 'cracks' for hidden food particles. Also, always use a clean towel when wiping down the table. A sponge that may have been used to wipe up the area where raw chicken was prepared can spin-off serious illness.

Stove, Vent Hood - Most households have a hoodie over the stove, with some venting out the roof. Amid the cooking process, grease and food particles become glued to the hoodie. If these aren't cleaned off, what goes up - must come down. And if one is cooking, that dangerous goo could end up in your next meal.

Dining Lights & Rotating Fans - Fans are cool - but they spin and over time they collect dust which can end up spinning into your next meal. Lights attract bugs and although the sealed lighting does a great job in holding its catch, open-styled lighting doesn't. Ensure that your fixtures are routinely cleaned, and pay close attention to any located near the cooking area or over the dining table.

Toaster Oven - The tops of most toaster ovens are fairly resistant to food particles whereas the tiny doors are not. Take a quick peek at the crevice of your toaster oven and you may discover food particles which are waiting to be catapulted into your next toaster oven recipe.

Microwave - Tops and sides are notorious for catching splatters. And you sure don't want those splatters ending up in your next microwaved entree. To clean, boil a cup of water in the oven which will help make cleaning easier.

Dish Washer - Food that has been exfoliated from the dishes goes down the drain, but there is the issue of the door crevice where food particles can become lodged amid loading. Also, if you are in an area where the mineral content is an issue, your dishwasher can become caked in the mineral residue. Check - and clean regularly to prevent a potential serious illness.

Other problem areas where hidden danger lurks include: disposals, trash compactors and the open spaces and cracks along your countertop where food particles may lodge.

As to antibacterial soaps - do NOT use them. We've been preaching this for years - long before there was a public awareness. With a biologist in the family, it provides a bit of insight. Nonetheless, using antibacterial has the potential to create super bugs.

Things in your bath that can make you sick:

Toilet Handle & Sink Faucet Handles - While the toilet bowl gets great attention amid cleaning, the handle and sink faucets commonly get ignored. Think about it. Every time someone uses the toilet, they touch the handles with the very thing that may have come in contact with you-know-what.

Bathroom Door Handle - Be sure to give this a thorough cleaning as there are those who may not take time to wash their hands after using the toilet.

Toothbrush - Decades and decades ago, one of our sons kept getting strep throat and our doctor asked if I'd replaced his toothbrush. I did - and our son got well. With this said, toothbrushes should be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and baby shampoo on a regular basis. If you have little ones in your household, don't leave the peroxide within reach.
