And that hunk of Valentine's Day chocolate sure looks good!

But you're NOT going to eat it.  This is what you're going to do, you manly man, you! It's time to pamper yourself. Even manly men need pampering, especially those on a diet. To keep you motivated, try the following:

August. Dog Days. The lazy, hazy, never-ending days of sweltering heat. You can't even fish properly because anything you catch comes out of the lake, poached. But August does have its highlights! Like....melons! Lush, low calorie, vitamin packed melons!

Melons are a bit like berries - once they are cut into, they won't keep well for a long period of time. Therefore, try to enjoy as soon as possible. When choosing your melons at the store, look for withered stems and take a big sniff of the melon. You should be able to pick up its sweet scent if it's fully ripened. Avoid melons that contain gouges, slits, cuts or that are mushy or that are clearly evident of being over-ripe. Melons can carry dangerous salmonella, so you should wash your melon before slicing.

September! Something just fell off of the turnip truck. Turnips? Oh yes!  AND - winter squash! There are so many different varieties of winter squash, each unique with its own taste. They make excellent warm soups as well as sweet treats, resembling the taste of pumpkin.

Fall also brings about the opportunity for viewing the glorious colors of the season - which in turn, presents a great chance of getting in a little exercise. And then we have football...oh my, how could we forget football?  

DIET TIPS FOR OCTOBER

October - a scary month!  What a purr-fect month for dieting, right? Yes, October can indeed be a very scary month for dieting for these reasons:

 a) The holiday season is close at hand and if you're not careful, you'll add another ten pounds to your scales AGAIN this year!

 b) Old Man Winter is also fixing to spread his icy wings and when cold weather hits, outdoor activities become limited.

c) When an individual is dieting, many times their immune system becomes very fragile. With the cold and flu season around the bend, it could get very ugly.

What you can do:

a) Boost your Willpower and promise yourself that you won't allow Holiday goodies to rule your tummy. Keep light canned and frozen fruits on hand and packets of dried fruit for snacking time.

b) Bring your outdoor activities indoors.  Bowling is a great, as is racketball.

c) Take your multi-vitamin, extra Vitamin C and get in calcium via skimmed milk at least 3 times per day.  

The calcium has an added benefit. According to recent studies, people who included milk in their diet saw better weight loss results. And let's not forget that Halloween falls during this glorious month. So plan ahead. Get out the old sewing machine and start working on your costume.

DIET TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

Some men prefer to diet during this pre-holiday-fortnight, then let loose on the big day. Others remain careful before, during and after the big day - so it's totally up to you as to how you'll want to handle your feasting enjoyment. One Good Diet Tip: Should you go A-I-P on the big day, you MUST get directly back onto your diet. If you don't, you're just about guaranteed to put on at least 10 pounds by the first of the year.

DIET TIPS FOR DECEMBER

- Pound cakes add pounds to the chest area and tum-tum.  

- Fruit cakes just weigh you down, thus weighing your scales down, too.  

- Do your best to avoid nuts, candy, cakes, cookies (yes, even the ones with sprinkles on them) and anything that sticks to your fingers.

- But of course, you WILL want to enjoy your fair share of treats during this festive month.  The trick is to COUNT the CALORIE COST into your daily diet.  

Please note that all naughty dieters will receive coal in their stockings rather than sugar free gum.
