Causes of Weight Gain

Because weight loss basically involves reducing the amount of food (calories/energy) consumed in the daily diet, it is widely assumed that eating too much food was responsible for causing the weight gain.  However, many other factors trigger weight gain, with perhaps stress being the highest contributing factor to weight gain in the modern day world.

The Links to the Causes of Weight Gain & the Importance of Determining Personal Weight Gain Triggers

To your left is a non-exhaustive list of many factors which cause and/or contribute to weight gain. It's important for any individual suffering from obesity to determine the reason for their weight gain and keeping that in mind, we hope that our list helps you pinpoint some of the issues which may triggering your weight gain.

If you are able to identify your weight gain triggers we suggest the following:

- Meet with your personal physician to discuss methods for solving these issues.

- Meet with your minister or spiritual leader for support.

- Enlist the support of friends and family members.

- Embrace a healthy diet based on the Food Pyramid.

- Get the extra pounds off, then use your newfound knowledge to keep them off.

- Embrace an activity plan that you'll continue throughout life.

- Embrace a hobby or mental activity that you enjoy.

Why Overeating Isn't Solely Responsible for Weight Gain

A carpenter prepares to hit a nail with his hammer, yet an expected noise in the distance catches him unaware and he hits his thumb. His thumb isn't throbbing because he intended to hit it with the hammer, but because he missed the nail due to the sudden disturbance.

Weight gain is much the same. Take Lucy who was busy at work when her boss lit into her, criticizing her job performance. When lunch time arrived, Lucy was so distraught that she not only ate a Mexican fiesta, she had a large slice of cheesecake, too.

Lucy was reaching out for something that was comforting to her, something familiar such as a security blanket to a small child. Although she was headed towards her lunch like the hammer to the nail, her level of stress caused her to overeat, thus resulting in weight gain.

Lucy didn't gain weight because she intended to gain weight, but because her life was disturbed by stress.  Lucy might avoid weight gain in the future by the following:

  • By simply realizing that stress is one of her triggers for weight gain, Lucy can be aware of her diet when stressful situations arise.
  • Lucy might benefit from taking a stress management course complimented by breathing exercises.
  • A brisk walk during 5-10 minutes of lunch might also have benefited Lucy and helped relieve stress.
  • Lucy might also find her stress significantly reduced by finding a job where the boss appreciates her efforts.

In Summary

Weight gain is something that nobody likes to deal with.  In fact, the sooner the weight is gone, the better.  However, until an individual determines the causes and situations which trigger overeating - and in turn, weight gain, the cycle is like a circle.

The good news is that once an individual determines the cause(s) of their personal weight gain, with a few savvy changes they won't ever have a need to worry about gaining weight again.
