Stress, Perhaps the Leading Cause of Weight Gain

You wake up running through the house, trying to get as much done as possible because you've only got so much time before you head off to work.  Once you arrive at work, you're going at a fast pace because you've got to make an impression with the boss.

Once home, you set out the fast-food on the family table that you purchased as you were leaving work.  Frankly, you're just too tired to cook - even if you were in the mood. And even though you placed the food on the table, you are fully aware that the family will fill their plate and head off to play video games, watch the tube or browse the net while they are eating their meal.

From dinner time until bedtime, there is even more to get accomplished - from getting the kid's settled to preparing for the following day.

With all the bustling about, there simply isn't time to plan out healthy meals for many individuals. In fact, they are so concerned with matters and situations that require their focus that meal planning is the last thing on their agenda.  Until they decide to go on a diet that is.

Even then, the diet is generally short-lived because other things keep getting in the way.  There simply isn't time to lose weight because it requires so much dedication, so much focus - so much concentration.

How Stress Causes Weight Gain

When we are stressed, we look for things to comfort us, including comfort foods such as chocolate, cheese, pudding and desserts which tend to be high in fat and calories, thus causing weight gain.

When we are stressed, we often don't pay attention to the foods that we are consuming, including the amount of foods that we consume, thus setting the stage for weight gain.

When we are stressed, we find difficulty concentrating, generally bypassing activities that we would otherwise find enjoyable. Inactivity due to stress in turn can cause weight gain.

Stress can also bring on a number of illnesses that can also contribute to weight gain.

Stress makes us feel unwell and irritable and when we feel ill, we tend to reach for foods that make us feel better - generally those comfort foods as mentioned above.

In Summary

There are two types of stress - positive stress and negative stress.  Although life will never be stress-free, there is much that we can do to keep it at a manageable level.  You may discover by decreasing your level of stress, you'll be decreasing the numbers on your weight scales in turn.
